New Moon Ritual Guide: Setting Intentions with the Lunar Cycle

The new moon is the darkest point of the lunar cycle, the moment when the moon is between the earth and the sun and invisible in the night sky. In spiritual practice, the new moon represents beginnings, potential, and the fertile void before something new takes form. It is the ideal time to set intentions, plant seeds of desire, and begin practices you want to grow over the coming cycle. The new moon ritual is one of the most universally practiced rituals in contemporary spiritual life.

What you need

When to do it

The new moon occurs once per month. The ritual is traditionally performed on the night of the new moon itself, but the 24 to 48 hours following are also considered potent for new moon work. Many people track the lunar calendar and prepare the night before.

Cleanse your space

Open a window briefly or pass sage or palo santo smoke through the room. This clears the energetic atmosphere and signals the beginning of intentional time. If you do not use smoke, simply take three deep breaths and mentally declare the space clear and ready.

Create your altar

Arrange your candle, crystals, and paper on a surface. There is no right way to do this. What matters is that the arrangement feels intentional and that the space is clean and undisturbed. Some people include a photo, a flower, or an object that represents what they are calling in.

Light the candle

As you light it, state or visualise your intention for the ritual. The candle is both a symbol and a focal point. You might say: 'I open this space for intention-setting. I am ready to begin.'

Write your intentions

Write clearly and specifically what you are calling in this cycle. Write in the present tense as much as possible. 'I am building financial stability' rather than 'I want to have more money.' Aim for three to five intentions. More than that dilutes the focus.

Hold your crystals

Take each crystal in your hands and speak your intention for it. Clear quartz to amplify, citrine for abundance and confidence, moonstone to trust the cycle. Place each one on top of your written intentions.

Sit in silence

After writing and placing the crystals, sit quietly with the candle for five to ten minutes. No agenda, no more words. Just presence with what you have set in motion.

Close the ritual

Extinguish the candle safely and say a quiet thank you, to the moon, to yourself, to the practice. Leave your intentions and crystals in place for at least three days. Return to the intentions at the full moon to see what has grown.
