How to Cleanse Crystals: Every Method Explained Simply

Crystals are not passive objects. They interact with the energy around them, absorbing, transmitting, and holding what they encounter. Cleansing is the practice of clearing accumulated energy from a stone so it can return to its natural state, ready to be worked with intentionally again. How often you cleanse depends on how frequently you use a stone and in what context: crystals used for emotional processing need more regular clearing than those sitting quietly on a shelf. Most practitioners cleanse at least once a month, often at the new or full moon.

What you need

When to do it

Any time, but the new moon and full moon are traditional cleansing points that many practitioners find natural rhythms to work with. New moon for releasing old energy, full moon for charging and refreshing.

Moonlight

Leave your crystals on a windowsill or outside overnight during a full or new moon. This is the gentlest and most universally safe method, suitable for virtually every stone including water-sensitive ones. Even on a cloudy night, the moon's energy is present.

Sunlight

A few hours in morning sunlight will cleanse many stones, but be cautious. Amethyst, rose quartz, fluorite, celestite, and other colour-sensitive stones will fade in direct sun. Use this method only for clear quartz, hematite, carnelian, and naturally dark or white stones.

Running water

Hold the stone under cool running water (a tap is fine) for one to two minutes while visualising the water carrying away accumulated energy. Safe for hard, non-porous stones like quartz, jasper, obsidian, and agate. Do NOT use water on selenite, angelite, celestite, lepidolite, kyanite, malachite, or any stone with a Mohs hardness below 5. When in doubt, use a dry method.

Smoke cleansing

Pass your crystal slowly through the smoke of sage, palo santo, cedar, or incense for twenty to thirty seconds. Safe for all stones, including water-sensitive ones. Visualise the smoke drawing out and carrying away any energy that does not belong to the stone.

Sound

Use a singing bowl, tuning fork, or bell near your crystals. The vibration from sound moves through the stone and displaces stagnant energy. Effective and completely safe for all stones, including fragile ones. Ideal for a whole collection at once.

Selenite or kyanite charging plate

Place your crystals on a slab of selenite or alongside a piece of kyanite overnight. Both minerals are self-clearing and believed to transmit a cleansing vibration to whatever rests against them. A low-maintenance method ideal for daily or ongoing clearing.

Earth burial

Bury a crystal in the earth (your garden, a pot of soil) for 24 hours to one week. The earth will draw out and neutralise accumulated energy and naturally recharge the stone. Mark the spot so you can find it again. Best for dense, grounding stones like black tourmaline, hematite, and obsidian.
