Lapis Lazuli Meaning, History & Healing Properties

Lapis lazuli is a deep blue metamorphic rock made up primarily of lazurite, often flecked with golden pyrite and white calcite. It has been prized for thousands of years: ancient Egyptians ground it into powder for pigment, medieval artists used it to paint the skies in illuminated manuscripts, and cultures from Mesopotamia to the Andes treated it as sacred. Its name comes from the Latin for stone and the Persian word for sky. It is as close to a piece of sky as you can hold.

What Lapis Lazuli means

Lapis lazuli is the stone of wisdom, truth, and deep communication. It is linked to the throat and third-eye chakras and is used to strengthen authentic self-expression, support intellectual clarity, and connect with higher understanding. If you have something important to say and are struggling to find the words, or if you want to speak with more courage and less performance, lapis lazuli is the stone for that work. It also supports meditation and the kind of inward listening that wisdom requires.

How to use Lapis Lazuli

Wear lapis lazuli as a necklace or earrings to keep its throat-opening energy close. Hold it during journaling or creative writing to access more honest expression. Place it at your altar during rituals focused on truth-telling or calling in guidance. In meditation, hold lapis lazuli at the centre of your forehead and breathe into a sense of expansion and clarity. Cleanse with moonlight or a brief sound clearing. Avoid prolonged water exposure.

What Lapis Lazuli pairs well with

Sodalite is a natural companion to lapis lazuli, both working with the throat and mind. Amethyst deepens its spiritual dimension. Clear quartz amplifies its truth-speaking qualities.
