How to Use a Pendulum for the First Time

A pendulum is the gentlest divination tool to begin with, because there is almost nothing to learn before you can use it. It is a weighted point on a chain that swings in answer to a question. The skill is not in the tool but in asking well and staying honest, and both come quickly. Here is how to start the first time you hold one.

Setting your yes and no

Hold the chain so the weight hangs free and still. Ask out loud, show me yes, and watch which way it swings: front to back, side to side, or in a circle. Then ask, show me no, and note that direction. Do this each session before you ask anything real, because the responses can shift with your mood and the day. Once your yes and no are set, you have everything you need.

Asking good questions

A pendulum answers yes and no, so phrase for that. Closed, specific questions work: is this the right time, would this choice serve me, is there something here I am not seeing. Open questions like what should I do have nowhere to land. Ask one clear thing at a time and let it settle fully between questions.

Keeping it honest

The hardest and most important part is noticing your own hand. It is easy to nudge a pendulum, usually without meaning to, toward the answer you already want. Hold your arm steady, keep your attention soft rather than straining, and treat surprising answers as the interesting ones rather than mistakes. Used this way, a pendulum becomes less a fortune teller and more a way to hear what you already quietly know.

Begin with a pendulum that hangs true.
