How to Cleanse Your Crystals, Without Overcomplicating It
People overthink cleansing crystals more than almost anything else in this practice. The truth is plain: cleansing is just resetting a stone so it feels like yours again, and there are a handful of reliable ways to do it. You do not need a full moon, expensive tools, or a ritual you are afraid of getting wrong. Here is the honest version.
What cleansing actually means
Crystals pick up the energy of handling, travel, and the room they sit in. Cleansing is the act of clearing that residue so the stone returns to a neutral, settled state before you work with it. Whether you read that literally or simply as a moment of intention, the practical effect is the same: you handle the stone, you reset it, and you start fresh. That is all it is.
The methods that reliably work
Running water is the quickest reset for hard stones: hold the piece under cool water for thirty seconds and dry it. Selenite is the gentlest method of all, because it cleanses other stones simply by sitting beside them, with nothing to manage and nothing that can damage a delicate piece. A selenite cleansing kit pays for itself for exactly this reason. Smoke from sage or palo santo works for stones and for the space at once. And moonlight on a windowsill overnight is the slow, no-effort option, which is why most people land there.
The stones to keep away from water and salt
This is the part worth memorising, because it prevents the only real mistakes. Soft or fibrous stones do not belong in water: selenite will eventually dissolve, and pieces like malachite and angelite do not tolerate soaking. Salt scratches and pits many polished surfaces. When in doubt, choose a dry method. Smoke, selenite, and moonlight are safe for everything, which is why they are the ones we reach for first.
How often, honestly
Cleanse a stone when you first bring it home, and again whenever it has done heavy work or simply feels dull to you. For a piece you carry or wear daily, a quick reset once a week is plenty. There is no schedule you are failing to keep. The stone will tell you, in the sense that you will notice when it stops feeling like yours.
Start with a stone that asks for almost nothing.
